Geologists not sure why Love Creek slide happened
Over 450 geologist, hydrologists and other experts recently met to discuss the devastating floods and landslides that occurred in January of 1982 and the possible causes and potential preventative measures. The group focused on two areas of concern. one is the dramatic increase in population in the area with people increasingly moving to higher more unstable areas with greater risk. The second is noting that there are several known fractures undergraound in the area and that this land had been slowly moving over the last 1000 years and finally gave way. There was also discussion that events such as these heavy rainfall seasons may happen every 40 years, not every 100 years if the data is carefully studied. This should warrant discussion about increased controls over where people can live and also proper notification systems for increased risk.
