When feminism wasn't in flower
Article provides an overview of Georgiana Kirby as well as her close friend Eliza Farnham. Both women were interested in many current issues such as women’s right to vote, prison reform, and the abolition of slavery. They both believed that young women need further education and taught many classes while they lived in Santa Cruz. Much of the knowledge about these remarkable women has been discovered in Georgiana’s diaries which she kept from 1852 to 1860. Carolyn Swift and Judy Steen, local researchers and librarians have spent 119 years poring over the diaries and are providing an edited version of them or the public.
