Death of John V. Pennant

John V. Pennant, who came her from Pennsylvania a short time ago, died yesterday at the home of his son, WM. Pennant. His death was due to apoplexy.

The deceased was 83 years old and a native of Pennsylvania.

DIED: PENNANT In Santa Cruz, Nov 8, John V. Pennant, a native of Pennsylvania, aged 83 years, 6 months and 8 days.

The funeral of deceased will be held from the Chase Undertaking parlors 38 Walnut av., this Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment in SCruz/OMP.

Ward M. Tennant has petitioned for letters of administration in the estate of John V. Tennant, deceased.

The estate consists of $1442.30, money on deposit in the Santa Cruz County National Bank.

Wells Webster of Kimberly, Idaho and Ward M. Tennant were named as executors. The legaes are Mrs. Anna Webster, a daughter of Kimberly Idaho and Ward, a son.

John Van Buren Tennant was born on 30 APR 1836 in New Milford, Susq. PA. He was on property tax roll in 1860 in New Milford Susq, PA. 2 oxen, 1 cow, $29.00. He served in the military on 25 Aug 1862 in the Civil War. Union Army Private Co. F 141st PA. Infantry, Col. Henry J. Madill. John V. wrote in his diary 20 Jan 1863 "marched up the river intending to cross. Camped in the woods, commenced to rain, woke up in the morning laying in water." Wounded at Battle of Chancellorsville, VA. May 2 and 3 1863. 72 were killed, 490 wounded and 194 missing in action. John V. was discharged by special orders, disability wounded in left leg, Aug 27, 1863. His diary and the bullet he was shot with are in the possession of his great grandson, Ray Tennant of Sacramento CA. He was on property tax roll in 1863- 1867 in New Milford Susq. PA.

John V. Tennant was married to Hannah Rovilla Mowry twin (daughter of George William Mowry Jr. and Margaret Louis Hollenbeck) on 24 Dec 1864 in Braintrim, Wy., PA by Rev. Ezekial Sturdevant.

He appeared on the census in 1870 in New Milford, Susq. PA. Mother Jemima living with family, age 58. He owned land on 19 Dec 1874 in Mead, Marietta Twp., Saunders NE. purchased from Collin Frances. He appeared on the census of 1880 in Kearney County, NE. He was in Kearney County Gazette Newspaper on 11 July 1883 in Minden, Kearney, NE. “J.V. Tennant is ahead. He has farmed 75 acres this season, with an ox team. Cultivated all his corn with one ox. How is this for business? Last year he had 1100 bushels of wheat and other grain and one team and himself. He appeared on the census in 1890 in Minden, Kearney, NE. Special Veterans Census. He appeared on the census in 1900 in Minden, Kearney, NE. Married 36 years, 3 children all living, a landlord. On August 5, 1906 his wife Hannah died in Minden NE. He appeared on the census in 1910 in Kimberly, Twin Falls, ID. Widowed, aged 73. He was in 1914 in Kimberly, Twin Falls, ID. Signed brother Marcus Tennant's death certificate. Moved to Watsonville, Santa Cruz County and would walk with a cane in the Veteran's (Memorial) Day parades in Watsonville. He died at the home of his son Ward Tennant of a brain hemorrhage died on 8, Nov. 1919 in Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz, CA. Buried in SCruz/OMP Cemetery, Military marker.
