James Grylls Taylor was born in England about 1845 and came to Santa Cruz from Melrose Highlands Massachusetts. Because of the number of John Taylors in the Union Army his unit and service dates have been difficult to determine. The Santa Cruz County Register for 1896-99 describes him as being a clergyman, 51 years of age 5'6" in height, of a light complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. When he first registered to vote in Santa Cruz in 1895 his address was listed as Pacific Avenue, however the 1896 register indicates that he had subsequently moved to 8 St. Lawrence St. in Santa Cruz. 1st Congregational Church records indicate that he preached his first sermon at that church April 21, 1895. While in Santa Cruz he is believed to have become active with the Wallace Reynolds Post as he was described as having been on one of the Lincoln Day school visitation teams. He preached his last on March 27, 1898 before returning to Boston. Enroute to Boston he wrote the sentinel describing his trip throughout the Pacific Northwest and on to St. Paul.
