Santa Cruz Surf (October 26, 1887)Death of Henry Skinner
Henry Skinner, President of the Bank of Santa Cruz County, died at his home at 8:30 o'clock last evening. His illness dated from Monday, October 18th, when he was taken with hemorrhage of the lungs at his hotel in San Francisco whither he had gone to meet a niece who was to arrive from the east. Another and more severe attack was experienced next day while returning on the cars, and Mr. Skinner arrived at Santa Cruz in a thoroughly prostrated condition. He was taken home in a carriage and was unable to leave the house afterwards.
Mr. Skinner as a native of Vermont, and at the time of his death was 43 years old. He came to Santa Cruz in 1868 in company with Ben Porter, in whose store at Soquel he was afterwards a clerk, He next ran the Pacific Ocean House for a while in company with Mr. Stevens. In 1877 he was the nominee of the Republican part for Assemblyman from this district, Being defeated by the Democratic candidate, George Pace of Watsonville. He afterwards purchased the Eureka ranch near Boulder Creek and was a very successful rancher. Disposing of this project he again came to Santa Cruz in the spring of 1885 and became connected with the Bank of Santa Cruz County as President. During the early days of his residence here Mr. Skinner was married to Miss Sarah Parcher. His family at the time of his death consisted of his wife, mother and two daughters.
