Nineteen Survivors of the Early Wars Will Be Guests of Honor this Memorial Day

Jos. Slaven

At the age of 17 Comrade Jos. Slaven, 78 Ocean street took up arms in the Civil War with the 86th Regiment in Mount Union, Ohio. This was in '64 and there was a company of "kids" that had the pleasure of doing guard duty. He tells this as being some thrilling event in his young life, but says he was always sorry that he could not get into any of the fighting.

He came to California to get away from the intense cold and heat and claims Santa Cruz is the best place he has ever lived. Having been her for the last ten years he says he ought to know.

Taps Called For Civil War Vet

Joseph Slaven, a Civil War veteran and a resident of Santa Cruz for 10 years died yesterday.

Mr. Slaven lived to the good age of 86 years. He was a native of Ohio. In his native state he enlisted at the time of the Civil War in Company G, regular Ohio infantry.

In this city he held membership in Wallace Reynolds post G.A.R. He came to Santa Cruz from Missouri.

He is survived by a son, Frank, whose home is in Alaska; a daughter, Mrs. Jennie Greathouse, who cared for her parents in the home; and a grandson J.C. Slaven, salesman with the Buick garage.

The services will be held Monday morning at the Chapel of Chase's mortuary and the burial will be at the SCruz/OMP cemetery.

Funeral Rites for Joseph Slaven

Impressive funeral services were held yesterday for Joseph Slaven at the chapel of Chase's mortuary with the comrades of the Wallace Reynolds Post, G.A.R. present.

Beautiful flowers covered the casket and the church rites were conducted by Rev. W.H.D. Hornaday of the East Side Methodist church.

The service of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War was conducted and the G.A.R. had its part.

The hymns, "Lead Kindly Light" and "Jesus Savior Pilot Me," were sung by Harry Murray. The burial was at SCruz/OMP cemetery.
