Passing of Veteran of the Civil War

Louis Fitzsimmons, who has been ill for some time, passed away last night at his residence at 14 Campbell St. where he made his home with his children.

Mr. Fitzsimmons had reached the age of 82 years, and was born in New York, but his home has been in Santa Cruz since the fall of 1889, the greater part of the time on Campbell St.

Mr. Fitzsimmons was a carpenter and cabinetmaker by trade, and was known for his good workmanship. He was in religious faith an Adventist, a member of the First Advent Christian church of this city, where in years past he had been most active and an office bearer.

He was a deep Bible student, and was a firm believer in the doctrines of his church.

He served his country during the Civil War and was a member of the Wallace-Reynolds post, G.A.R. Mr. Fitzsimmons will be remembered as a good citizen, as devoted to his family, loyal to his flag and kind friend and neighbor.

His wife preceded him in death a number of years ago, and he is survived by children as follows; Mrs. Bertha Dunning, Berkeley; Archer L Fitzsimmons, Mrs. Addie M. Barnet, Martin J. Fitzsimmons of Palenta and Mrs. Hattie Johnson.

The funeral will be held Monday morning from Chase undertaking parlors.

Editor's Note: The Santa Cruz Evening News of Saturday June 9, 1923 also noted that "Mr. Fitzsimmons was a veteran of the Civil War, enlisting in the 1st Minnesota sharpshooters. He was made first Lieutenant and served three years and ended by serving six months' a prisoner, the time being divided between Libby, Salisbury, and Danville prisons."

Funeral Over L.D. Fitzsimmons

Funeral services over the late Louis Fitzsimmons were held yesterday from Chase's undertaking parlors where many relatives and friends gathered.

Rev. I.N. Archibald of the Advent Christian faith, in which the deceased was a believer and who was a close friend of Mr. Fitzsimmons conducted the service.

The hymns "Lead Kindly Light" and "Some Time We'll Understand" were sung by Harry Murray. Many flowers had been sent and the casket covered with them as borne by M.B. Bryant, Dr. J.H. Phillips, G.M. Babcock, C.K. Greenfield, G.H. Fisher, and C.A. Reed.
