Kenneth J. Reid (1918/?)

From a few references and some speculation a foggy portrait of this soldier can be attempted.

First World War draft records for California note that Kenneth James Reid was born on November 9, 1897, and that his mother's name was Dellie Belle Reid. The location of Kenneth's birth, the names of other family siblings and date of his family's arrival in Santa Cruz have not been discovered. An article appearing in a 1919 memorial issue of the Santa Cruz High School Trident honoring former classmate who had died while in military service noted,

"Kenneth Reid (Class of 1917) was also but a short time with us. His teachers and classmates will remember his sunny disposition and his unselfish refined manners."

University of California, Berkeley records reveal that Kenneth James Reid served as the freshman class treasurer during 1917-1918. Draft records note that while a student at the University of California, he was living in Oakland, California.

Kenneth Reid was inducted into the US Army on September 12, 1918. At that time he was described as being five feet six inches in height of medium build with blue eyes and brown hair. The 1919 Santa Cruz High School Trident article went on to state, "he was killed in a truck accident at a camp in Washington State." That camp would probably have been Camp Lewis. The burial location of Kenneth Reid has not been located.
