Alfred R. Moore (1944/04/22)

A lake in Florida was the final body of water for this naval airman.

Alfred Raymond Moore was born about 1922, in Cortez, Colorado, to Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Moore. Shortly after his birth, Alfred's family moved to Watsonville where he was raised with his brothers Edgar and Stanley and sister Virginia. Alfred attended local schools and entered Watsonville High School in 1935 where he was active in school affairs. After graduating from high school in 1939, Moore entered Salinas Junior College and worked as a clerk at a Purity store.

In December 1941, Alfred Moore joined the US Navy and was sent to San Diego for boot camp training. After completing basic training, he served as a painter third class in San Diego.

Moore applied and was accepted into the naval air cadet program in January 1943, and was sent to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, for cadet training. Additional instruction at Olathe, Kansas, and Corpus Christi, Texas, followed, and on February 10, 1944, he was commissioned an ensign.

Ensign Alfred Moore was flying over a lake on a training exercise near Sanford, Florida on April 22, 1944, when his plane collided with another aircraft. It crashed into the lake and Moore was killed. His remains may have been interred in Watsonville Pioneer Cemetery, but cemetery records are inconclusive.
