The WCTU national group was founded in Illinois in 1874, with the Boulder Creek branch formed in 1892 partially in response to the many saloons in town. The notes list the Allegiance Oath of the group and the dues or “a penny a day and a prayer”. Also listed is the Washingtonian Society formed by the Sons of Temperance with local missionaries in 1875. The Society was based on the ideals of the Temperance Movement and its mission was to create a literary and social organization. A hall was built by Peery in Lorenzo for the meetings altho most people lived north of town. The notes also describe what a typical meeting of the WCTU was like with various ledges to flags and to the Temperance movement. Meeting rules were followed to conduct business. The Washingtonian Hal was eventually abandoned and torn down as it was no longer in the center of town.
