The WCTU was formed in the late 1800s and provided an alternative to the saloons with free reading rooms, dinners and entertainment in the WCTU building and halls. The railroad donated the land for the building and JW Peery built the hall in Lorenzo. A law was passed to forbid drinking a full decade before the nation passed the Prohibition statute. The WCTU folded its charter in 1948 but the building stands as a gift store. The buggy on the roof is in memory of the days when buggies, cows and other things were placed on roofs by drunken men.
