The author notes that the first early wave of pioneers were mostly single men or families without children and they settle in government land that was offered for settlement. The large Mexican land grants were all south of Boulder Creek between Felton and Santa Cruz. Over the years more families arrived and the beginnings of a town formed with a school, a boarding house and a meeting hall.
