George D. Cross recalls a bit of Boulder Creek's past
His first years were spent on a ranch in Sacramento and in Napa. he had some gold fever and went to Alaska for a few years and met his friend Fred Moody there. They decided to come back to Santa Cruz and started a freight hauling business. They had 30 horses and many wagons and buggies and stagecoaches t transport wood supplies, make deliveries of supplies, transport for morticians, and transport business people throughout the county. When Boulder Creek became a resort area they switched to running tours and to transporting guests and their baggage to their hotels. The livery stable slowly transformed to a gas station over time and Moody and Cress were partners until the 1940s. At that time they split up and George Cress Sr gave his share of the business to his son who ran the gas station for several more years. In the interview George notes how things have changed over the year in Boulder Creek. He relates his involvement with the rum runners during Prohibition and with the movie industry when they came to town. He still lives in Boulder Creek with his wife Mildred Moody, who is the sister of his former partner.
