...Old Adobe gets new roof
Neary Adobe
- date of construction of adobe has never been established
- Santa Cruz' only adobe from Mission days - it is to be a state monument
- Believed to have served as quarters for the Mission guard, or escolta
- no evidence that the adobe was ever topped with a tile roof; may have originally had a thatched roof, which was common with other Mission buildings
- Current roof is too weak and fragile to support a human safely
- at rear of adobe, old porch was removed
Most important feature of repair will be a solid concrete beam that will hold the structure together without being visible - then new shingled roof will be put on
- Ivy vine has caused considerable water damage to adobe, seepage into the roof and walls
