Article describes the history of Hiram Scott and other settlers from Maine who arrived when the Spanish controlled California. These new pioneers learned Spanish and created networks across the area. Hiram Scott made a fortune in the gold mining period and then invested his money in business ventures in Stockton before returning to Scotts Valley and taking up farming.
