Owner of landmark store, 68, dies

Frank Casalegno died recently at the age of 68. He was the owner of a “mom and pop” store on Old San Jose Rd named Casalegno’s Grocery and Gas Station which he operated for over 50 years. he was well known by locals and visitor to the area for his friendliness and good humor about his need for a wheelchair to get around. He provided change for people out of a cigar box and has used his hand powered wheelchair to be mobile after being hit by a car which left him paralyzed. He moved to Santa Cruz when he was a young boy from Fairbanks Alaska and went to Old Mountain School. He worked on his family’s ranch in the Soquel foothills before his accident. He is remembered as the most unprejudiced and friendly person to those who knew him.
