An Apology and an Announcement 26 1/2 III
I hereby announce myself as a
candidate for Mayor, at the
election to be held on May 3rd.
I apologize to those friends &
fellow citizens, to whom I have
persistently declined to become a
candidate for this nomination.
I was sincere in my determination
2) to keep out of politics.
On Friday April 1st, the book "Santa
Cruz: the Green(?) County of California,"
in its preparation of which I had been
engaged for many a year, want to be
published, completed.
On Saturday morning April 2nd, when I
took up the Sentinel I read:
114 daily line(?)
113 forties(?)
3) This recalled the comfort made during
my administration as Mayor which by
concessions & contribution resulted in
opening the Cliff Drive, through the Cowell
property. - a new viaduct(?) over the railroad
tracks - a new approach via Black
B(?) Terrace - a new lease of right-of-
way . thoughts to lighthouse preservation
of other considerings & betterment to this
drive.
This agreement was all based on a pledge
to put the drive in good condition & to
4) build restraining walls when necessary
to protect the roadway against incursions
from the sea.
After this agreement was made, it was
brought before the City Council, induced &
adopted, & became municipal obligation.
The Southern Pacific Railroad company. The
Henry Cowell Lime(?) & Cement company. The
Santa Cruz Bank of Savings &
Loan, the U.S. Department of Commerce,
the Phelan(?) Estate corporation, the Santa Cruz
Portland Cement Mr. W. S. Goodfellow,
Mr. Bishop Warren, Mr. J. P. Smith(?)
5) & Mr. J. N. (?), all fulfilled
their promises, with patriotic thoroughness(?).
Specifically, the Santa Cruz Portland
Cement Company was to donate the ce-
ment necessary for building the restraining
walls along the cliff. The company
was called upon for a carload which
they delivered promptly altho the (?) of
cement had heavily advanced below
date of promise & date of delivery.
This cement was requested by the
city for other uses & cliff protec-
6) tion abandoned. promises unkept.
Now. "a 200. ft cave in", & I am
a candidate for Mayor, on the
platform with a compact upon
honor is more sacred than a
contract by law.
Respectfully submitted,
Arthur A. Taylor.
