Actors Chop Cowell's Wood
Selig Players Go Through Their Scenes in Woodland Near Big Trees; Players Will Go South and Return to Produce "The Danites" --Big Cast

Today the Selig motion-picture players have been up on the Cowell property near the Big Trees acting out a few scenes of a drama they have in preparation for an early release. One of the Cowell ox-teams was driven across the bridge which leads from the flat south of the trees across the San Lorenzo river to the wooded hill on the other side, as a portion of the drama. "The Diamond in the Rough" is the name of the film-story being staged by the Selig people and it must be admitted that Miss Bessie Eyton, if she be the diamond in question, looked rough enough. Her hair - and it is a beautiful auburn, by the way, and there is plenty of it - was flying free over her shoulders, she wore a dilapidated old skirt and waist and heavy backwoods brogans, and around her ankles were wrapped pieces of old cloth.

In accordance with the story enacted this morning the actors chopped some of Mr. Cowell's wood and kept themselves generally active among the tall redwoods in response to the operator's directions.

The company has decided, after their visit this week, to return to Los Angeles where they will get the necessary costumes and impedimenta needed and return here for the enacting of "The Danites," the play made famous by McKee Rankin for so many seasons. The story of this play deals with the historic massacre of California-bound emigrants by the Mormons in the days of the gold rush and is a highly thrilling dramatic offering.

It is expected that over one hundred people will be used in enacting the scenes of this play and all the ........outdoor appurtenances used in desert settings, such as prairie schooners, cowboys, cattle, etc., will be used."
