President Don O. Colegrove of the Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture of the Pajaro Valley, Tuesday issued the following report on the recent survey regarding the public attitude of members on the return of Japanese evacuees:

"At the request of many of its members, the chamber recently sent a questionnaire to its entire membership, which embraces a broad cross-section of the business, industrial and civic life of the city of Watsonville and its environs. This questionnaire propounded inquiries on the attitude of local people with respect to the proposed return of Japanese to this locality.

"Returns have been received from a substantial number of members of the chamber, and the survey discloses the following public attitude:

"The first question stated, 'Do you believe the return of Japanese may have harmful results, both to the Japanese and to our own citizens, from a social standpoint?' The response thereto showed a vote of 3 1/2 to 1 in the affirmative.

"The second question with respect to whether local people would employ persons of the Japanese race showed a vote of nearly 5 to 1 against such employment.

"The third question dealing with the question of whether former Japanese residents and their children should be urged to re-settle in the middlewest showed a response of nearly 5 to 1 in the affirmative.

"The final question, 'Do you think property-owners would refuse to rent or sell land or houses to Japanese,' disclosed a vote of more than 4 to 1 in the affirmative.

"This unprejudiced survey was made in an effort to ascertain the prevailing opinion of chamber members on the resettlement of Japanese in the area, which is now being facilitated under direction of the War Relocation authority. The data compiled will be submitted to the state senate committee on Japanese resettlement and to Congressmen John Z. Anderson and George Outland.
