Japanese who will be evacuated from the Pajaro valley soon - perhaps late this month - were assured Monday that living conditions in army-established assembly centers will be adequate.

Spiking rumors being circulated by some Japanese and some non-Japanese, Col. Karl R. Bendetsen, in charge of the army-ordered evacuation from the Pacific coast, explained that assembly centers in many cases are still being constructed, but that they will be completed before Japanese are moved in.

Evacuees are being fed army ration B, a balanced diet consisting largely of canned foods and rice, prepared under direction of Japanese cooks, Bendetsen said. "The army diet, which has improved the health of soldiers all over the country, should prove adequate for any group of people," he remarked.

Japanese mothers and babies and prospective mothers were assured of special care aboard evacuation trains.

The attorney general's office in Sacramento announced that American-born Japanese being evacuated from prohibited zones will not lose their right to vote in the state's primary and general elections. The Japanese probably will cast absentee ballots at assembly centers or in the resettlement areas."
