Patrick Walsh Dies, Age of 95
Patrick Walsh, one of the best known residents of the county, died yesterday at his home in Aptos.
He lived to a good age and if he had celebrated his next birthday which would be St. Patrick day, he would have reached the good age of 95 years.
He was known far and wide as the pioneer hotel keeper at Aptos and while engaged in business there, he made many friends by his genial and friendly manner.
The Live Oak Hotel, situated in the center of the village, is still there as an attractive and comfortable hostelry.
Mr. Walsh was there when the late Claus Spreckels had many times come to the Aptos ranch and they were all acquainted with him. During the days when Aptos was the outlet of the Loma Prieta Mill and Lumber Company and the Hihn mill at Valencia, this hotel did a big business.
Mr. Walsh was a native of Kilkenny, Ireland, and came as a boy to the United States and settled in Missouri and moved, 62 years ago to Aptos, following his marriage to Kate Leonard. The wife preceded him in death, passing away in 1913.
He was a staunch Catholic and when services were held at the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel at Aptos, he was always present at mass.
His death occurred at the Fern street home of Mrs. Catherine Garretty, his niece.
Besides Mrs. Garretty, the following nephews and nieces survive: Mr. and Mrs. William White, Santa Cruz; James and John H. Leonard, Santa Cruz; Edward M. Leonard, San Francisco; Miss Kate Leonard, Soquel; Margaret Leonard, San Francisco; Jack Walsh, Santa Cruz; Mrs. T.J. Leonard, Berkeley, and Mrs. Lucy McCabe, Watsonville. There are also many grand nephews and nieces.
An adopted daughter, Mrs. Ellsworth Fitzgerald, is residing in San Francisco, but will be present at the funeral services, which will take place at Holy Cross Church at 9 o'clock this morning. The remains are at the Wessendorf mortuary.
