Portrait of Robert Smith

DIED: WATSONVILLE Dec 23d, 1899d Robert Smith a native of Tennessee, aged 80 years 9 months.

Col. Robert Smith died in this city last Saturday morning, and his funeral took place Sunday afternoon. Col Smith was born in Jacksboro, Tennessee on March 1st 1819. He dwelt in Virginia for a considerable part of his lifetime, and was prominent in the affairs of that State up to and during the Civil war. With his family he came to California in 1871, and for three years lived in the San Joaquin Valley. In 1874 he moved to this valley and made it his home. In 1890 he was elected Justice of the Peace for this township and served in that position until 1898, when failing health compelled his relinquishment of official cares. His health commenced to fail a few years ago, and the death of his devoted wife, to whom he had been married over half a century, was a loss from which he never recovered. Col. Smith was a gentleman of the old school, one who was devoted to his family, hospitable to his friends, and of kindly manner to all. He waited the final call with courage -- he was ready. He had suffered much, but he sustained it bravely. He left two sons and five daughters- Sam C. Smith of Pajaro, Robert J. Smith, of San Diego, Mrs. Sarah Peery, Mrs. Narcissa Thompson, Mrs. G. W. Gretter, Mrs. Jas. I King, and Miss Edmonia Smith.
