DIED: SHEPARD -- At Twin Lakes, March 5, Gilbert Shepard, aged 84 years, a native of New York.

Funeral of the deceased will be held this Tuesday at 2 o'clock P.M. from the Chase undertaking parlors. Friends and acquaintances are invited to attend. Interment in SCruz/OMP cemetery.

Dr. Shepard Dies at Twin Lakes

Gilbert Shepard, after an illness of over two years, passed away at his home at East Twin Lakes on Sunday night, where he has resided since coming to Santa Cruz from Berkeley seven years ago. Born in New York 84 years ago, he received his early education in the public schools, then was graduated from Beloit college with the class of 1866, and four years later was graduated in medicine from Hahnemann Medical college, Chicago. In 1863 he enlisted in Co. M, First Wisconsin cavalry, and served until the close of the war. He is a member of the local post, G.A.R., also the First Baptist church of Santa Cruz.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Helen Shepard of Santa Cruz; a son George H. Shepard of Purdue University, Lafayette, Ind.; two daughters Mrs. Katherine L. McMillen of Berkeley and Mrs. T.T. Holcombe of San Mateo, and a sister, Mrs. Carrie Spaulding of Marble Rock, Iowa; also by five grandchildren, Andrew G. Shepard; Gilbert, Jessie and Duncan McMillan and Helen Holcombe.

Funeral services will be held from the Chase undertaking parlors this Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be at SCruz/OMP.

Old Soldiers at the Funeral Service

Gilbert Shepard, who died at the age of 84 years at his East Twin Lakes home, was buried yesterday afternoon with impressive services held at the Chase undertaking parlors, followed by the burial at SCruz/OMP cemetery.

Many were present and the friends had sent beautiful floral tokens. The services were conducted by Rev. Chas Leachman, Rev. J.N. Hoover of the Baptist church, pastor of Dr. Shepard being ill.

The members of Wallace Reynolds post, G.A.R. were present and conducted the service. Mrs. Mary Croop and Mrs. Virginia Smith sang favorite hymns, and at the close of the G.A.R. service sang "When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder I'll Be There," it being a request of Dr. Shepard that this hymn be sung.
