George Paden, Civil War Vet, Buried Today

Students of the International Bible school of which he was sponsor today officiated at the funeral services that were conducted at the Chase mortuary for George Paden, 85, who died Sunday at the family home at 72 Ocean View Avenue. Mr. Paden was born in DeCalb county, Alabama, September 4, 1844, and had resided here for the past 17 years. He was a long time member of the Grand Army of the Republic, having served as corporal in the cavalry of the Union army during the war of the rebellion. He enlisted in Jefferson county, Mo., in November, 1862, at the age of 17 years in the Tenth Regiment cavalry and served until the surrender of Lee first in the Missouri barracks and later in Company A of the Second cavalry in Nashville Tennessee. He was married February 24, 1867, to Diana Johnson. Aside from his widow he is survived by the following children and grand-children: William R. Paden, Ransome K. Paden, Arthur E. Paden, Augustus D. Paden, Mrs. Hannah Mortau, Mrs. Bettie Richie, Mrs. Belle Latham, Mrs. Maude Hohenshell, Miss Evelyn Hohenshell and Miss Georgia Hohenshell. In 1888 Mr. Paden moved to California with his family and made his home in Hanford, moving from there to Santa Cruz in 1913. William Nunes spoke the eulogy at the services this morning and M. R. Neilan led the prayer, Mrs. William Nunes and Miss LaVerne Stone sang "Earthly Treasures Dim" and "Rest For the Toiling Hand". The body was sent to Armona, Kings county, for burial in the Granville cemetery tomorrow.
