Passing of David D. Owens

David D. Owens, who had lived to the good old age of 85 years; died yesterday morning at the home of his son, D. A. Owens at 170 Broadway. He was a splendid type of gentleman and was born in Wales, but early in life came to this country and settled in Ohio, later moving to Carthage Mo., where he was a prosperous farmer until seven years ago, when he came to Santa Cruz.

He was affable, and soon won many friends. His wife died here about a year after he arrived.

He has since divided his time between the two sons who live here, D.A. and J.B. Owens, and his brother, O.M. Owens of Bixby St., and he also made several trips to his old home in Missouri and also to Colorado.

He was a veteran of the Civil War and a member of the G.A.R. He also was a very regular attendant at church services.

Mr. Owens also leaves beside his sons her, two others, Edward J. of Coaldale, CO, and J.W. of Springfield Mo.,; two brothers, Robert of Newark Ohio, and O.M. of this city; also two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Davis of Newark, Ohio, and Mrs. Kate Thomas of Halstead, KS.

DIED: OWENS - In Santa Cruz, January 27th David D. Owens, aged 85 years, 6 months, and 12 days, a native of Wales.

The funeral of deceased will take place Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the parlors of C.C. Chase on Walnuts Av. Friends and acquaintances are invited to be present.

Funeral of David Owens

Funeral services over the late David Owens were held yesterday afternoon from Chase's undertaking parlors, with many relatives and friends present.

He was an old soldier and members of the G.A.R. were present and gave their ritual service, with the church service conducted by Rev. W. Hare of the Congregational church.

The hymns, "Jesus Lover of My Soul" and "Abide With Me" were sung by Mrs. McCaslin, Miss Adams and Messrs. Murray and Hilliker.

The burial was at the Odd Fellows cemetery, and the pall bearers were veterans of the Civil war.
