Wife Gravely Ill As Life Partner Dies

The sudden passing last night of Edward Millard at his home 91 Barson St, brought to an end an active life of 87 years. The reported serious illness of Mrs. Irene Millard, the wife of the deceased has accentuated the sadness that has fallen on the home today.

Mr. Millard was a native of New York, and a veteran of the Civil War. Before coming here he was a successful fruit farmer in the Dakotas. He had been a resident of Santa Cruz for the past 20 years, having lived the entire time in the one house. He was a member of the Baptist church, a staunch Republican and belonged to the Wallace Reynolds post of the G.A.R.

The deceased had lived a retired, quiet life during his residence in Santa Cruz with his wife and son, Ted Millard, well known young business man connected with the Hartley Hardware company. Mr. Millard had enjoyed good health even in his old age and his death was a surprise and shock to relatives and friends he passed away last evening during the absence of his son who had left to drive the day nurse to her home.

Besides the wife, Mrs. Irene Millard, who is a sister of Frank Bixby of this city and Mrs. Hattie Reynolds of Soquel, the only son Edward S. Millard is the only other surviving relative.

The body is now at the Wessendorf mortuary awaiting funeral arrangements.

Edward Millard, Veteran of Civil War Laid to Rest.

Final rites for Edward Millard 87 years of age, who passed away at his home 91 Barson street October 22, were conducted at the Wessendorf mortuary this afternoon at 2 o'clock. "Home of the Soul," and "Just As I Am," were sung. Rev.. W. B. Pearson officiated. Pallbearers were Bernard Abrahamson, R.G. Leeman, H.J. Godfrey, S.C. Spencer, A.S. Davies and Fred Barson. Burial was in SCruz/OMP cemetery.

Edward Millard was born June 25 1841 in Steuben county, New York. He enlisted in the 141st regiment of New York volunteer infantry August 19, 1862 and saw much active service. He participated in General Sherman's famous march to the sea.

Mr. Millard moved from New York to Minnesota in 1880, where he took up a homestead and engaged in ranching until he retired and moved to Santa Cruz in 1906. He was a staunch Republican, having cast every vote for that party since he cast his first vote for Abraham Lincoln. He was a member of the Wallace Reynolds post No. 32 G.A.R.

Besides the wife Mrs. Irene Millard, who is a sister of Frank Bixby of this city and Mrs. Hattie Reynolds of Soquel, the only surviving relative is a son Edward S. Millard.
