Santa Cruz Surf (November 11, 1912)Death of John P Martens
Died- In Santa Cruz Nov. 9, 1912, John P. Martens, a native of Denmark aged 80 years, 28 days. His life is ended and his body sleepeth.
The death of John P. Martens at his comfortable home at the corner of Campbell and Fair streets this city, removes from among us one of God's nobleman.
His death will bring sorrow to his circle of admiring friends in Santa Cruz, and to a vastly larger circle in his former home at Victor Montana where he lived for thirty years prior to coming her, and where he had been prominently identified with all town and county interests.
Feeling the necessity of retirement from the activities of an industrial life, Mr. Martens sold his valuable farm in Montana, and with his devoted wife came to the genial climate of California to spend his declining years. Nearly seven years ago they established themselves in their pretty home here, at which Mr. Martens often greeted his friends with "welcome to Surfside."
Mr. Martens was devotedly fond of flowers, and the variety and beauty of those in his yard, and the well kept premises, attest the care he gave them and the many hours he enjoyed at such activity.
Mrs. Martens and the only daughter, Mrs. Troff, of Victor, Mont., who arrived the first of last week, were constantly at his bedside to comfort him during his last days, and with them they will take the body back to Victor and there tenderly bury it in the community in which he lived so long and was so favorably known. Mr. Martens was a member of Santa Cruz Lodge No. 38 F.& A.M. and a Past Master Mason.
Funeral services will be held at the home here at 10 a.m. Tuesday, the body escorted to the depot by the Masonic order and buried with Masonic rites at Victor.
