Leon Jones was born in 1841 in Platte City, Mo. He has been a merchant, contractor, and farmer. He enlisted, July 12 1862, in the 12th Pennsylvania Cavalry, and served as private, sergeant, 2d lieutenant, and 1st lieutenant, commissions dating June 24, 1864, and January 11 1865; was attached to the Army of West Virginia; took part in the battles of South Mountain, Boonesboro, Antietam, Winchester, Gettysburg, and Kernstown; was wounded at Kernstown; carried the dispatches from Grant to Sheridan while the latter was at Harrisburg, VA., bringing him down the valley on his famous ride; rode 110 miles in fifteen hours in carrying those dispatches; was honorably discharged in March 1865. Comrade Jones joined Phil Sheridan Post, G.A.R. of San Jose Cal., of which he was adjutant; was transferred to George H. Thomas Post of San Francisco; is a resident of Santa Cruz.

DIED: JONES- in Los Gatos, Oct. 13th, Leon E. Jones, aged 81 years a native of Missouri.
Funeral of the deceased will take place Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from Wessendorf & Sons undertaking parlors. Friends and acquaintances are invited to attend.
Leon Jones Dies at Los Gatos
Leon E. Jones, at one time assemblyman from this district died Friday at Los Gatos, where he has resided for a number of years.
Mr. Jones was born in Missouri 81 years ago and in Santa Cruz married Mary Cutler, and some years after her passing married her half sister, Mrs. Nellie Cutler Hinds, widow of the late Peter Hinds, who was city treasurer here for many years.
Mrs. Jones was always interested in politics and was honored by the Republican Party, of which he was a member. He leaves a son Henry Jones, a merchant at Lemon Cove, Tulare county.
The funeral services are to be held Monday afternoon from Wessendorf & Son's undertaking parlors.

Burial of Leon E. Jones
Funeral services over the late Leon E. Jones were held yesterday from Wessendorf & Son's undertaking parlors and were conducted by Rev. I.H. Winter of the Presbyterian Church of Los Gatos.
The singers were also from that city as were the pallbearers, who were old soldiers.
The burial was at the Odd Fellows cemetery.
