Conrad Herwig Dies at Age 81 Years; Funeral Thursday

Conrad Herwig died at his home at the age of 81 years. He was a pioneer of this section coming to Corralitos from Illinois in 1881, his sister, Mrs. William Rogge, residing in Watsonville at the time. He was a native of Hanover (GE).

In 1884 Herwig moved to Gilroy, where he conducted a shoe business until 1918, when he returned to Watsonville to make his home. He had lived here ever since.

Herwig was a veteran of the Civil War, having fought for the south under General Price. He was well known to many in this city and in Gilroy, and a host of friends will be grieved at his death.

He leaves to mourn his loss three daughters, Mrs. J. Swift and Mrs. Stanley Olive of Watsonville and Mrs. I. Patterson of Gilroy, and two sons, Herman S. Herwig and Elmer R. Herwig of Watsonville also 24 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock.

Funeral Held For Conrad Herwig

Funeral services were held this afternoon at Aston & Neal's Funeral Home. There was a large attendance of friends and many beautiful floral offerings.

Rev. E.C. Philleo pastor of the First Presbyterian church, conducted the services. Music was by Mrs. Ida White.

Interment took place in the I.O.O.F. cemetery at Gilroy. the pallbearers were Henry Struve, Peter Nelson, Pack Nielson and William Ryson.
