Comrade Englehorn, 112 Myrtle street will be 95 years old the 18th of July and carries on a very interesting conversation. He enlisted the 5th day of October 1861 at Lansing, Iowa, in Company B 12th Iowa Regiment. A few of the conflicts participated in were capture of Fort Donelson, Pittsburg Landing, battle of Shiloh, battle of Corinth, battle of Tupelo, Price's raid through Arkansas, battle of Nashville, Vicksburg campaign and battle of Tuberlean.
"If I could tell you some of the things that happened you would think I was the biggest liar on earth, so we will pass those over." But he did tell of a stray minnie taking his cap off in the battle of For Donelson. The entire Commandery was taken prisoner for six months, but were exchanged at the end of the period.
Mr. Englehorn came to Oregon in 1882 because of his children wishing to come west, and to Santa Cruz in 1917, as his daughter lives here. His son lives in Oregon, but he says he wants to stay in Santa Cruz as long as he lives.

Old Member of Local G.A.R. Post is Dead
Word was received yesterday by Mrs. Jennie Greathouse of the death in Los Molinos of Mathias Englehorn, yesterday morning. there are many in Santa Cruz who will remember Englehorn, a member of the Wallace-Reynolds Post, G.A.R., who lived for a number of years with his daughter, Miss Sophia Englehorn, at 112 Myrtle Street. After her death several years ago he went to live with his son, F.J. Englehorn, in Los Molinos.
He was very close to the century mark and has had a most interesting history. He enlisted in October 1861, at Lansing, Iowa, in Company B, 12th Iowa regiment. He participated in the conflicts of Fort Donelson, Pittsburg Landing, battle of Shiloh, battle of Corinth, battle of Tupelo, Price's raid through Arkansas, battle of Nashville, Vicksburg campaign and battle of Tuberlean.
The entire company was taken prisoner for six months in the battle of Fort Donelson, but were exchanged at the end of that period.
His children living in the west wanted him to come west, and in 1882 he went to Oregon. It was in 1917 he came to Santa Cruz to be with his daughter. He was very fond of Santa Cruz and hoped he might always live here.
There are four children surviving him, Frank and Edwin and two daughters.
The message telling of his death came from his son F.J. Englehorn.
