Notes from Dorothy Spinetti, great granddaughter (February 4, 2000)
Melville Chubbuck, the son of Mary Ann Wales and [?] Chubbuck, was born in Eaton New York in 1842. On the 16th of February 1864 he was enrolled for three years as a private in Co. D of the 10th New York Cavalry.
Editorial Notes from Robert L. Nelson (September 27, 2002)
The training which Melville received during March and April 1864 was probably field or "on the job" training. The significant engagements in which the 10th New York Cavalry would have been involved during Private Chubbuck's enlistment were:
- Haw's Shop/Hanover -- 5/28/64 (42 killed) Grant attempted to get to Cold Harbor before Lee
- Trevilian Station -- 6/11-12/64 (21 killed) Sheridan's Cavalry tried to destroy a major RR Station
- St. Mary's Church -- 6/24/64 (22 killed) Confederates cavalry attacks wagon train they were guarding
- Boydton Rd. -- 10/27-28/64 (17 killed) Grant continues to extend the lines at Petersburg
- Appomattox Campaign -- 3/28-4/09/65 (72 killed) Petersburg siege, Five Forks Battle, Lee's Retreat
During the period of 1864-1865 the Commander of the 2nd Division to which the 10th belonged was Maj. Gen Gregg. Maj. Gen Crooks followed him in 1865.
On July 10, 1865 the 10th New Jersey Cavalry was merged with the corresponding lettered companies of the 24th New York Volunteer Cavalry to become the 1st New York Provisional Cavalry.
