Bequeathed to every American is a priceless legacy preserved to us by the valor of the Boys in Blue.

THIS CERTIFIES that CYRUS BIBBINS
enlisted from Lewis County, New York, on the 6th day of August, 1862, to serve three years during the war, and was mustered into the United States service at Sacketts Harbor, N.Y., on the 12th day of August, 1862, as a Private of Captain Edward E. Brown's COMPANY "K" REGIMENT NEW YORK VOLUTEER HEAVY ARTILLERY, Colonel Samuel Graham commanding.

The fifth New York Heavy Artillery was completed by the consolidation of the 2nd Regiment Jackson Artillery, and the Jackson Heavy Artillery, March 6, 1862. The 70th State Militia also furnished a number of men, as did later the 3rd Battalion of Black Artillery. The earlier companies as completed were mustered into the United States service in New York Harbor, in April, 1862, the remaining companies being mustered at Sackett's Harbor, in September of the same year. The original eight companies served in the New York Harbor at Forts Hamilton, Lafayette, Wood, Gibson, Richmond and Schuyler until May 28, 1862; then at Baltimore, Md., and other points of the Middle Department. Companies "A" and "F" served at Harper's Ferry, VA., from June 19, where they were surrendered in September, 1862, rejoining the main body at Baltimore, Md., after being paroled. The 3rd Battalion served with the 22nd Corps, Defenses of Washington, from December, 1862, until Nov. 24, 1863, afterward at Harper's Ferry with the 8th Corps, Army of West Virginia. The 1st and 2nd Battalions were also ordered to Harper's Ferry, April 19, 1864. The 1st Battalion Companies "A", "B", "C" and "D", served with the 1st Brigade, 1st Division, Army of West Virginia, 8th Corps, in the field from May 1864. It was relieved by the 2nd Battalion, July 29, 1864, and returned to Harper's Ferry. the 2nd Battalion, Companies "E", "F", "G", and "H", served in the field in the 1st Brigade, 1st Division, army of West Virginia, until Oct. 28, 1864, when it returned to Harper's Ferry. The regiment served as Infantry and Heavy Artillery. During its service the regiment, or portions of it, took part in engagements as follows; viz.:- Point of Rocks, Berlin, Md., Siege and Surrender of Harper's Ferry, Maryland Heights, Bolivar Heights, Piedmont, Lexington Buchanan, Lynchburg, Liberty, Salem, Harper's Ferry (2nd Battle), Snicker's Ferry, Winchester, Martinsburg, Cedar Creek, Charleston, Halltown (two battles), Berryville, Opequan Creek, Opequan, Fisher's Hill, Cedar Creek (2nd and 3rd battles), and a number of minor engagements and skirmishes. On June 26, 1865, the regiment, commanded by Col. Graham, was mustered out at Harper's Ferry, W. Va.

They said Cyrus Bibbins was constantly with his command during its service as outlined, bore a gallant part in all its engagements, and rendered faithful and meritorious service to his country.

He received an HONORABLE DISCHARGE at Harper's Ferry, Va., on the 26th day of June, 1865, by reason of General Order #94, the war having closed.

He is a son of Jeremiah and Naomi (Vickery) Bibbins, and was born at Turin, New York, on the 24th of May 1844. He was united in marriage to Filona Smithling, at Turin, New York, October 29th, 1867, from which union were born four children, viz.: Alice, (deceased), Edith, Leon and Pearl.

He is a member of Wallace-Reynolds Post, No. 32, Department of Cal. and Nev., Grand Army of the Republic, of which he is a Past Commander.

His wife is a member of Wallace-Reynolds Corps, No. 57, W.R.C. of which she is a past President.

His brother, Joseph served in Company "K", 5th New York Heavy Artillery, and Mrs. Bibbin's brothers Joseph and John Smithling also served in Company "K", 5th New York Heavy Artillery.

These facts are thus recorded and preserved for the benefit of all of those who many be interested.

G.A.R. Veteran Called by Death

Cyrus Bibbins, a veteran of the Civil War and a resident for many years of this city, who only had the good will and the esteem of the community, passed away yesterday at his home at 85 Cayuga St., where he had been ill for eight months, and has been under the devoted ministration of his daughter, Mrs. Edith Whidden.

Mr. Bibbins was at the time of his passing 85 years of age, which were well spent. He was born in New York, and came to Santa Cruz with his family from Minnesota 37 years ago.

During all the time of his residence here he has been prominently identified with the Wallace-Reynolds post G.A.R., of which he was a past commander, and is the second member of that fast disappearing body of veterans to pass away within a week. He enlisted at the time of the Civil War with the Fifth New York heavy artillery.

His wife preceded him in death a number of years ago, and surviving him are two daughters, Mrs. Edith Whidden of this city, and Mrs. Pearl R. Kraus of Yerrington, Nevada; a son C.L. Bibbins of California St. and the following grandchildren: Mrs. Pearl McCallister of San Francisco, Mrs. Beryl Kroenlein, Miss Edith Whidden, Guy Mabry, Frank William, Florence and Leona Bibbins of this city, Frealon Bibbins of Richmond, and Warren Woodruff of Long Beach; the latter being the son of a deceased daughter.

The funeral services are to be held on Monday afternoon at the chapel of Chase's mortuary. ATTN: G.A.R.

Members of Wallace Reynolds Post will meet at post headquarters Monday Dec. 24 at 1:30 p.m. to attend the funeral of our honored Past Commander Cyrus Bibbins. Funeral services at Chase's mortuary at 2 p.m. By order of Thos Foster, Senior Vice Commander.

DIED; BIBBINS\t- In Santa Cruz, Dec 21, Cyrus Bibbins, aged 85 years, 6 months, and 27 days; a native of New York. Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 24 at Chase mortuary, at 2 p.m. Friends and acquaintances are invited to attend. Interment in I.O.O.F. cemetery.

G.A.R. Assist at Bibbins Service

Services in keeping with those for a veteran of the Civil war were conducted yesterday for Cyrus Bibbins, a past commander of Wallace Reynolds post, G.A.R. at the chapel of Chase's mortuary.

The officiating clergyman was the Rev. W.H. Hornaday, who also sang the hymns, "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "No Night There," with E. Leedham as accompanist.

The Daughters of Veterans of the Civil War and Wallace Reynolds post, G.A.R. conducted their ritualistic services. The pallbearers were grandsons.
