[Describing action at the battle of Bear River in February of 1863] "The Indians were now surrounded and a hand-to-hand conflict ensued. Colonel Connor and Major Gallagher, his volunteer aide, galloped down among the troops. Lieutenant Berry was badly wounded in the shoulder." (p. 73)

State of Military Affairs

Captain Albert Brown's company known as Co. L, Second California Cavalry, is stationed at Fort Churchill, Nevada Territory. The company was recruited principally in this county, and any tidings of their movement or welfare are received with interest by their numerous friends and acquaintances at home. An impression seems to prevail that they were engaged in the recent Indian engagement which ended in the great Indian battle near Salt Lake [Bear River]. This is accounted for in the fact that Lieutenant Berry and Quinn were mentioned as having participated in that section. We see it announced (unofficially however) that Lt. Berry has been promoted to a Captaincy of Co. A 2nd California Cavalry, and Lt. John Quinn has been promoted and transferred to the same company. 2nd Lt. S.R. Davis, of Company E has been promoted and transferred to Captain Brown's company.

Santa Cruzans of the Civil War

In an effort to update the concrete monolith on Front Street and Pacific Avenue especially for the traditional November 11 Armistice Day, Tom McHugh, long time resident of San Lorenzo Valley, has compiled the following information on local war dead during the Civil War.

Santa Cruz counted 23 men who died in action during the War Between the States. These men were among three outfits in the field and four home guard units which were activated during the conflict.

David J Berry- He died at Camp Union near Sacramento May 9, 1865 from internal ailments resulting from an arrow wound in the right shoulder at Bear River Utah two years earlier.
