Too Much Commercialism In Today's Surfing?

Article is the last of a 3-part series examining surfing in Santa Cruz. The author summarizes concerns about the commercialization of surfing, such as putting too much pressure on young surfers to win large prizes and blurred lines between professional and amateur competiton. The article notes that there is discussion of establishing a professional surfing association, which may help mitigate some of these concerns. Additional local concerns are noted from Mayor Richard Werner who claims that surfers at a recent competition caused problems, so he thinks the city should stop the contests. Others argue surfers can be encouraged to behave differently and contests can continue. Includes one photo of Cowell's Beach Surf Club members in 1941
