Charles Sanborn, driver of the Santa Cruz fire wagon

Charles Sanborn, the driver of the City of Santa Cruz's fire wagon, was the first paid fire fighter in the city. When he wasn't fighting a fire, he drove the water wagon that was used to sprinkle the streets to keep the dust down. When the fire bell rang, he would unhitch from the water wagon, go to the fire station, hitch to the fire wagon, and then hurry to the fire. The photograph is taken at the corner of Walnut and Pacific Streets.
