Oh for 1857, when a schoolhouse cost $2,233
Black and white photo of Mission Hill School topping Mission Hill.
The author provides details such as some of the first teachers at the first school (including Mr. Gatch who went on to be involved with several West Coast colleges), The author also mentions where and when some of local schools started: Pajaro Valley (1860) , Watsonville, Branciforte (1860), Grant (1863) and Bay View (1865). The author addresses the financial situation and size of the schools through the years; from the woes of the first school right at its second year of operation through the improvement with the formation of a Common Council in Santa Cruz city government in 1876 and its operation without a need for state funding until 1891. Finally there is a mention of Louden (London) Nelson and his philanthropy.
