Guy S. Read Jr. (1951/02/19)

Guy returned to a home in Watsonville, but it was far different from the one he had left.

Guy Smith Read Jr. was born to Guy and Marie Read in 1921. The location of his birth or information regarding his early life has not been found. He had at least one brother, Richard, living in Cleveland, Ohio, and a stepbrother, Laughlin Rhodes, living in Florida. During World War II, Guy Read served in the regular navy for six years and upon his discharge, settled in Watsonville.

Read was active in the life of the Watsonville community while residing in the Pajaro Valley. He began his career in finance and was employed by the local branch of the Bank of America. Guy and his wife, Marguerite, acquired a home in rural Aromas and in December 1949, a son, Geoffrey, was born to the couple. During his stay in Watsonville, he affiliated with the Watsonville Masonic Lodge and remained active in the US Naval Reserve.

In October 1950, Read was recalled to active duty and sent to the Hawaiian Islands, where he was assigned to a naval finance group. While serving in Hawaii, Tellerman Second Class Guy S. Read Jr. contracted an undisclosed disease or condition that took his life on February 19, 1951. His body was flown home and following a Masonic funeral in Watsonville, was buried with military honors at Pajaro Valley Memorial Park.
