Robert L. Thorp (1950/12/07)
The body of a local athlete and sailor gave out just as his marriage plans were falling into place.
Robert Lawrence Thorp was born in Santa Cruz, California on January 12, 1929, to Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence J. Thorp. He, along with his brother Wayne and sisters Dorothy and Margaret, spent their formative years in the family home on Stanford Street. Local schools provided him with his elementary education. During his youth, he was an active member in the First Baptist Church. In 1943 Robert Thorp entered Santa Cruz High School, where he was remembered for his athletic ability. He was a member of the high school football team for three years and served as its captain. Thorp graduated from high school in 1947 and was employed as a mechanic by the Santa Cruz Lumber Company in its Felton facility. He kept his football skills honed by playing as a quarterback on the Santa Cruz Seahawks team during their first two seasons.
In May 1948, Robert Thorp enlisted in the US Navy and was sent to San Diego to complete his boot camp training. He was then assigned to the naval air section and received training as an engine repairman. At the completion of his training he reported for duty to the Alameda Naval Air Station.
Thorp was diagnosed with an unspecified medical condition in June 1950, which forced cancellation of his September wedding date with Audrey Thuringer. He was admitted into the Oak Knoll Naval hospital in Oakland where he underwent treatment for his condition. On December 7, 1950, Robert Thorp succumbed to that condition and died. His remains were returned to Santa Cruz for a funeral and interment in Oakwood Memorial Park.
