Everett E. Schwarzmann (1945/11/01)

Everett just wanted to get back to teaching music when his body gave out.

Everett Edward Schwarzmann was born in San Francisco, California, January 2, 1912, to Edward and Minnie Schwarzmann. Everett and his younger brother Robert spent their formative years and received their education in San Francisco. Following high school, Schwarzmann attended the University of California at Berkeley and after graduating, enrolled in a Master of Arts music program at the University of Southern California, where he received his MA degree in 1939.

After leaving USC, Everett Schwarzmann moved to Santa Cruz, where he was hired as a music teacher at Mission Hill Junior High School. He became active in the local community and joined the First Congregational Church where he sang in the choir. He also became a member of the Toastmasters, Monday Music Club, Phi Delta Kappa fraternity and a local singing quartette. Schwarzmann married and was frequently accompanied by his wife on the piano during his singing performances.

In late 1942, Everett Schwarzmann received a commission in the US Navy and was sent to a special training school at Harvard University. Advanced training in radar at Mare Island and Treasure Island, California followed. In 1943 a son, Richard, was born to Everett and his wife in Santa Cruz during his absence.

Ensign Schwarzmann's first ship assignment was in the Atlantic Theater aboard a destroyer escort serving in the Mediterranean Sea. During the last six months of the war, he was transferred to the Third US Fleet in the Pacific theater and assigned to the battleship USS Wisconsin for the remainder of the war.

On October 26, 1945, on terminal leave and accompanied by his wife and son, Schwarzmann returned to Santa Cruz. The next day he was stricken with an undisclosed illness and on October 29, he was taken to Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Oakland. On November 1, 1945, Lt. Everett Edward Schwarzmann died. Following a funeral in Oakland, his body was interred in the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno.
