Marvin A. Walwick (1945/07/07)

A local chef and Merchant Marine messman ended his cooking days somewhere on Luzon.

Marvin Alfred Walwick was born about 1914 in Nashwauk, Minnesota, to Emil and Nellie Walwick. Marvin's father, a Finnish immigrant, worked as a locomotive engineer in a nearby iron mine. In addition to Marvin, the family included another son, Harding, and a daughter, Hazel. Marvin's formative years were spent in Nashwauk where he attended local grammar schools, Nashwauk High School and Junior College. The time of his arrival in California is not known. While living in Santa Cruz, he married a local girl, Dorothy Rae Wiley, and was employed as a chef at the Casa Del Rey and Palomar Hotels.

During the summer of 1943, Walwick joined the Merchant Marines and after a brief training period, was sent to the South Pacific to serve as a messman. While at Bantangas, Luzon, in the Philippines, Merchant Marine Seaman Marvin Alfred Walwick contracted an undescribed illness and died on July 7, 1945. He was buried in the Manila American Cemetery in Manila.
