Urbano Arrey (1945/05/29)

The country returned the Arrey family's Army and Air Force sons, but buried their Marine.

Included in the Watsonville Register-Pajaronian Roll of Honor of December 29, 1945, is the name of Private First Class Urbano Arrey. Arrey, a native of New Mexico, appears to have had a limited connection with Watsonville and Santa Cruz County. He was born in New Mexico January 15, 1927, into the family of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Arrey. His formative years and education took place in New Mexico prior to 1940 when the Arrey family moved to the Pajaro Valley.

During World War II, two of Urbano's brothers also served their country. Thomas served in Germany as a paratrooper and Henry with an army unit in Texas. His brothers Frank Jr. and Robert remained home in Watsonville with his sisters Virginia and Mary.

Urbano Arrey joined the US Marine Corps on September 9, 1943, and was sent to Camp Pendleton, California, for his basic and school-of-infantry training. Arrey went overseas in December 1943 and served with an unidentified regiment of the 6th Marine Division at Guadalcanal, Saipan, Guam and other locations.

During the fighting taking place at Okinawa on May 29, 1945, Private First Class Urbano Arrey was killed in action. His remains were later recovered and on March 11, 1949, reinterred in the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno California.
