Rufus Steele’s family were pioneers who had a ranch at Ano Nuevo in the 1860s. He got a degree from UC Davis and specialized in making Monterey Jack Cheese. He also worked many years for the Spring Valley Water Company and was the superintendent of the Pulgas Water Temple on the peninsula.
