These were the foot and horse fire days
First there were fire teams that would run the hoses to the fire after the alarm went out. Teams rained by running along WEst Cliff and when they ran down Pacific AVenue it caused quite a scene. Horse drawn carts began in 1890s with some automation. When the alarm went off the gates to the barn would be up and the horses stepped out. The harness dropped from the rafters right on to the horses. The horses were used to sprinkle the streets to keep the dust down but there were several problems that occurred when they weren’t available for fires. In the early 1900s with the advent of the automobile, the Fire Department got their first trucks with problems occurring when people jumped a ride onto the back for fun.
