The article recounts the history of the rail line from the early days of the lumber boom to the development of cars and roads and the gradual decline of the timber industry focus over the last 49 years. The trains did serve the recreation industry in San Lorenzo Valley as the area switched from harvesting timber to mountain vacations. But with the advent of highways over the hill the need diminished and Southern Pacific has called for the service to conclude.
