Echoes of the Past

Despite being a successful lumberman, Bloom was also an active conservationist. In 1902, te offered to sell a large parcel of his land to the newly established California Redwood Park Commission for $100 per acre but the deal was never closed and he kept logging. However, his actions spurred the purchase of land from the Big Basin Lumber Company which led to the created of Big Basin Park. He also offered to donate his road and the right of way to build a highway to Big Basin for easier access. He and his team also were instrumental in helping prevent a forest fire from entering the park and he was also a credible witness against a conspiracy to harvest both burned and live trees from the park after the fire.
