The Descendents and Ancestors of John Gustaf Frykland

John Frykland moved from Sweden to the Wisconsin area and got involved in th lumber industry, learning on the job. He moved to Boulder Creek in 1888 which had a booming umber operation at the time and he found a wife and he worked as a sawyer until 1903 when he and his family moved to Jenner and got involved in the timber industry there. John returned to Santa Cruz after he retired and had a small farm on the outskirts of town until he died. He experienced a series of medical disasters during his life, losing his first wife (the author’s mother) and almost losing his second wife. He himself had several surgeries but the author notes his resilience and work ethic as things that help him through. The author remembers his father as a firm disciplinarian but also one of the most trusted residents in town. He often held the paycheck of lumberman while they were in the saloons so they did not wind up broke the next day. He was known as “Honest John” by his many friends.
