Orrin S. Blodgett

Grizzley bears were common in the Santa Lucia and Santa Cruz Mountains at the turn of the century. This particular bear had been killing livestock and had just killed a large hog that Orrin had been fattening for sale. He and his sons stayed up for four nights waiting to see if the bear would come back for the meet and when they met face to face Orrin shot the bear and killed it instantly. There was never another bear sighting in the area. Orrin worked for the Assors office in Santa Cruz for many years and was known as “Pops” by many old timers.
