Letter from George L. Cress about his father George D. Cress

Detailed letter about George Cress Jr.’s parents George D. Cress and Mildred Howell Moody. Shirley talks about her Dad’s early years in the Sacramento area working on ranches, his time in the Alaska Gold Rush where he met his friend Fred Moody and the return of the two friends to Santa Cruz to start a freight transportation business in 1905. The letter has great detail about wages, the journey by boat to and from Alaska, and the early days of the livery stable where FRed and George managed a fleet of wagons, hearses, stagecoaches, and carts. Her mother married George as a second marriage and was an active member of Boulder Creek in her own right. The livery stable slowly morphed into a gas station and the two partners separated with one taking the station and one taking the construction business. George Cress Jr. (Shirley’s husband) inherited the station from his father. There are interesting facts about the early days of automobile travel as well. The letter covers George Cress Sr. Later life in many service clubs and leadership positions. Both parents died after fulfilling life’s in their 80’s and 90’s.
