Pioneer Reminences

Stories of the original mountain men who came from Arkansas and Texas to trap beaver and explore the area in the 1830s. The article describes the conflict between the Mexican government in place at the time and the new frontiersmen from Eastern United States. The most famous of the group was Isaac Graham who established a saw mill and distillery in the Felton area. he was arrested for possible conspiracy with John Fremont to take California from the Mexicans but released with compensation a year later. He used his money to buy part of the Rancho Zayante and expand his operations. There is also mention of Felton in 1869 as growing rapidly.
