Farewell to Felton
The Toft family moved to Santa Cruz from Monterey County after several years of drought ruined their farm. They settled in Felton after riding three days in a wagon to get there and Ted Toft has lived there for over 80 years. The interview touches on the early town and its businesses and how things have changed. he also discusses the railroads that were used for industry and then tourism. He remembers the loggin industry clear cutting the land and then a conservation movement getting started in the 1920s. Mr. Toft talks about his life as a student and how he got homesick for Felton and returned to work for Olympia Sand Company. He was also very involved in the establishment of the Felton Fire District and served as its Chief for several years.
